Mission Statement
DERAFFE Elevation Lab is a laboratory of ideas and a hub for new media culture, based in Vienna, Austria and London, UK.
Using tools such as VR (for co-working spaces), AI (for deeper understanding), Blockchain (for a fast research archive and a new NFT art market for collectables), 5G (for rapid data transmission and seamless remote work), and XR (for enhanced public space exposure, even during pandemic lockdowns), we aim to enrich the relational mechanisms of today’s society.
Our projects invite machines to participate in a creative dialogue, reshaping data as the raw material of the future.

DERAFFE is the creator of A.I. JARVIS—the first AI curator in history, SHUFTI APP—an app that uses geolocation for public exhibitions, DERAFFE VR Gallery—the first independent art venue in VR, and DERAFFE Pop-up Lab—a space for research and presentation.

A.I. JARVIS

DERAFFE created A.I. JARVIS, the first AI curator in history. A.I. JARVIS uses artificial intelligence to learn independently from databases provided by universities, galleries, festivals, institutions, and the internet, conducting deep searches. It implements the initial concept as the “key structure” for its curatorial decisions. At the end of this process, A.I. JARVIS selects participants—artists, creators, and collectives—for festivals, galleries, or biennials based on its accumulated knowledge and writes the curatorial concept. Its public physical appearances take the form of a spectacular hologram.
A.I. JARVIS was appointed curator of the Bucharest Biennial 2022, making it the first biennial in history to be curated by AI. Bucharest Biennial also adopted the SHUFTI AR App and the DERAFFE VR Gallery, becoming the first biennial curated by AI in both XR & VR.
A.I. JARVIS has been appointed as curator for future exhibitions and aspires to curate major events, operating similarly to a human curator—but through a more democratic and visually striking process.

Public space can serve as a fantastic exhibition platform. Viewers can experience the app on their smartphone with a single click. The app only needs to be downloaded once, after which users can access all ongoing exhibitions, select the artwork or exhibition they wish to see, and navigate to the specified location using in-app maps.
The app enables the organisation of multiple exhibitions simultaneously, in different locations around the world. This represents a unique appropriation of XR through geolocation—a process first developed by DERAFFE Vienna.
The public can also take photos of the artworks, share them on social media, and learn more about the surrounding city areas.
This innovation opens up endless possibilities for artists, designers, and creators of all kinds, as well as curators, to connect with new audiences—free from the constraints of lockdowns, venue size limitations, or health regulations.

A physical space in Vienna dedicated to research and presentation—a venue where we launch products and exhibitions, host debates, and organise meetings.
Visitors can meet artists, creators, and our team, as well as experience VR, XR, AI, and blockchain research. They can also explore the exhibitions we organise twice a year.
We provide stand-alone VR headsets for the public, which can be used within a specially designed space to enhance the immersive experience.

One of the most exciting developments in GAY45’s history has been its collaboration with A.I. JARVIS, the first academic art curator based on GPT-3.5. Developed in 2021 by DerAffe Vienna, the parent company of GAY45, A.I. JARVIS has played a key role in curating the publication’s social media and festival content, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in queer journalism.
